If you have been to the Bombay Cook Club, you’ll know how much Sultana and I adore Bombay. For us, Bombay isn’t just a city; it is an idea, an emotion, a passion and an endless source of inspiration. It is a city of indistinct time and space, where for many hundreds of years people have come from all over the world and all over India to make their fortunes. It is a city in multicolour, of great diversity and culture, where you can eat food from all over India, spicy kebabs and mouth watering street food and the best dosa around.
We invite you to join us on a tour of old Bombay, to spend a week with us in this magical place and experience all the food, sights and shopping this beautiful city has to offer. We will stay in a small luxury boutique hotel in Colaba, the historical centre of Bombay, dressed in the most beautiful vintage and bohemian style, and from here we will explore the lanes and alleys of the old city, home to some of the best restaurants and shops in the world.
We will eat vada pav and bhel puri and biryani, spicy Indian Chinese, and Chana Bhatura at Chowpatty Beach. We will enjoy afternoon drinks in the Sea Lounge at the Taj Mahal Hotel, beers at the Leopold Café on Colaba Causeway and late night chicken kebabs at Bademiya.
We will also take a boat trip from Gateway of India to the prehistoric Elephanta Caves, a tour of Dharavi Slum, the largest and most productive of its kind in Asia, have a day shopping like mad at Crawford Market and Chor and Zaveri Bazaar, see a Bollywood movie at the Art Deco Regal Cinema and enjoy an afternoon at my Aunty’s private residence, the original Tata family mansion. You will most certainly need to bring empty bags for all the shopping we will do, as we will visit some of the best shops in Bombay for clothes, jewellery and handicrafts.
With five days up our sleeve we will also make sure you have time to rest, a trip to Bombay isn’t a trip to Bombay without the odd afternoon siesta, and we will happily organise massage, beauty and hair treatments at your own cost at the hotel and in your room to energise you for the next shopping trip.
We promise you will finish your trip knowing South Bombay like a local, having had a lot of laughs along the way and wondering how you can get back for your next holiday.
