My beautiful Nana Zena De Souza was born on 22 January 1915 in Old Bombay.
Her father Valentine Fernandez was on active service in Mesopotamia when she was born, at the height of World War One. He died on 1 December 1915, having seen her photograph but never met her.
Nana lived in a spacious apartment in Colaba, the heart of old Bombay and the food from her kitchen was legendary. Despite years of financial hardship and set backs, the best produce was always purchased to make the best meals; and plans for lunch and dinner started early every morning before the daily trip to the market.
When Nana died in May 2013 at the age of 98, she left me so many of her treasured possessions, including a pile of hand written and printed cookbooks that had been her guide throughout her life. I am privileged to be able to recreate the amazing recipes she left behind, knowing they were cooked in her kitchen, and the kitchen of her mother and those who went before her.
